Penang Island 3D2N Part 2

Day 2

Vacation means no alarms, waking up late and missing the most important meal called "breakfast"! Eager to feed our hungry bellies, we headed straight to the famous Mee Goreng at Bangkok Lane.

The place has a really strong "1 Malaysia" vibe. SO much feels watching Malays, Chinese, Indians and other races enjoy their food together peacefully. Our plate of Mee Goreng (RM 4) arrived at close to lightning speed. First thing that sets this Mee Goreng apart from the rest is its generous amount of cuttlefish. It gave the dish a very interesting texture, resulting in some serious munching action. *munch munch munch* It's sweet and spicy taste is satisfyingly appetizing too, thanks to their specially made sauce using sweet potato + tomato sauce + chilli sauce. I'm also grateful that our very experienced cook has fried the noodles really quickly to avoid serving his customers a plate of mushy-stick-together-mess.

We ordered Pasembur too which turned out to be bigger than my face! Hence, we paid for a not-so-hawker-standard-price of RM 18. It tasted pretty good though. Everything was really fresh, there's crunch, there's bounce, loads of funky ingredients covered in a sweet peanut sauce. We saw other tables having much smaller servings, please ask for that as it makes way more sense.

Operation Hours: 8.30am - 6pm (Tuesday - Sunday)

Verdict: Yummy, fresh, fast and affordable Mee Goreng with other local food choices available.

After a short rest, we set out.... to EAT AGAIN! at Little Journeyman Café.

A high level ninja cafe hiding among a cute row of shophouses! *if you can ignore the conspicuously profound signboard of course*

Trying to take a hipster picture with my Hot Chocolate (RM 12) which lacked chocolatey taste and was only alright. Distractions aside, the main reason we came here was for their Raclette with Crispy Potatoes (RM 25)

I'll be honest- I'm totally biased and probably not the best to judge because I feel any food when covered with cheese is better. *most of the time* There was quite a lot of it too. The string of melted Raclette was mild but with that amount, easily overpowering. Thank heavens for the rocket leaves, mushrooms and tomatoes which gave the palate some variety. The potatoes weren't really crispy and as a standalone meal, it might be a little too heavy and monotonous. Overall, yes it was quite yummy, cheesy but surprisingly below my expectations. Wait, I did put them quite high. However, it was definitely satisfying watching them scrape the warm gooey cheese down on to the potatoes =D *style points*

The Grilled Chicken & Mushroom Fettucine (RM 19) was surprisingly pretty good though. The sauce was creamy and pretty on point but the chicken was a tad bit small and overcooked as it was a little dry and hard.

66, Jalan A. S. Mansoor, 10050 Georgetown, Penang 016 - 233 5097

Operation Hours: 11.30am - 10pm

Verdict: Comfortable environment off the beaten track, quite good food and friendly staff.

We then went to Wakao to feed our second stomachs some ice cream. Going for classics, we took a scoop of chocolate and another coconut. Probably the most disappointing RM12 I’ve spent on ice cream ever. It was mediocre at best. I hope they were just having a lousy day because it's kind of bad to get chocolate ice cream this wrong.

278 Lebuh Pantai, 10300, Georgetown, Penang

Operation Hours: 12:30pm - 10:30pm

Verdict: I’d give this a miss but hope they improve on their product. They do claim that their ice cream uses only natural ingredients.

It was time to drop by for another event - Dcode 1A Private Lounge. Yes there were free drinks but the place was a little quiet that night and for the sake of our livers, we will not do two nights in a row of free drinks. So supper time it is!

Feeling pretty hungry, we went to Restoran Nasi Kandar Sahirah Banu without much expectations. Needless to say, I was blown away by how brilliant their Maggi Goreng Cheese was (Maggi Goreng price because we forgot, but it was economical). It's mildly spicy, giving it a pleasant kick to the taste buds and a little cheesey making it richer than the usual maggi goreng. A plateful of pure mamak magic.

Jalan Fettes, Fettes Park, Tanjung Tokong, 11200

Operation Hours: 24 Hours

Verdict: Maggi Goreng Cheese was the best supper we could’ve asked for!

Day 3

We finally gave the hotel breakfast a try as we woke up late the day before. Much food. Buffet. So we had to make our first stop - just a dessert stop.

Dessert stop was Markus, a fancy-ish looking and highly rated restaurant for a change. We had their famous Cioccolato (RM28) which was molten Valrhona Guanaja Chocolate Lava Cake with Vanilla Haagen-Dazs ice cream. Ouhhh... The flavour was intense and smooth. Might not be a super gooey chocolate centre but the slight welcoming crunch on the outer layer was the bomb. Only downside we could find was maybe that the scoop of ice cream was too small.

37F Jalan Cantonment, Pulau Tikus, 10250, Georgetown, Penang

04-226 1443

Operation Hours: 12noon-2:30pm, 6pm-10pm

Verdict: Chocolate lovers do try!

Final stop for some Pork and chive dumpling (RM 14) and of course CKT. Unfortunately, this place was overhyped as service was poor, it wasn’t worth the long wait (an hour) and it’s overpriced for a hawker stall.

The dumplings were crunchy but the fillings were just pretty ok and overall slightly too oily

We paid RM10 for a plate of Char Koay Teow.

The lady chef wearing a red beret is known for her manners, or the lack of it but we were mainly put off by the long wait (one hour +)

Not quite sure if the cook was having a bad day because for a famous Char Koay Teow, we were highly disappointed as the noodles were slightly mushy, there was no "wok hei" fragrance and it lacked any oohm factor. Only plus was the prawns which tasted fresh and bouncy. Sad to say we can find better Char Koay Teow in Kuala Lumpur.

108, Lorong Selamat, Georgetown, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia

0 16-269 2222

Opening Hours: 11am - 6pm (Closed on Tuesdays)

Verdict: Char Koay Teow is a must have in Penang but I’d try it elsewhere =/

Foodcuddles enjoyed Penang very much and we want to thank every Penangite who tipped us on which food to try but unfortunately we could only fit so much in *literally* during our short stay.
